This guide shows how to configure DNS server Windows Server step by step, with every setting in the order you will use it. DNS is the phone book of your network: it turns names like dc01.lab.local into IP addresses. Active Directory depends on it completely, so DNS is usually the first role installed on a new domain controller. This guide shows the full setup in Windows Server 2016.

01constructionConfigure DNS server: Step 1: Install the DNS Role
Server Manager → Add Roles and Features → select DNS Server and install. In PowerShell: Install-WindowsFeature DNS -IncludeManagementTools. If you promoted the server to a DC, the DNS role and zones were configured automatically, and you can jump to step 3.
02downloadStep 2: Create a Forward Lookup Zone
Open DNS Manager (Tools → DNS). Right-click Forward Lookup Zones → New Zone:
- Choose Primary zone (and store in AD if it is a DC)
- Zone name: your domain, for example
lab.local - Allow secure dynamic updates on a domain-joined zone
Optionally add a Reverse Lookup Zone (PTR records) so IP addresses resolve back to names, which tools like nslookup reports use. In short, to configure DNS server reliably, follow the order above and verify each step.
03usbStep 3: Add Records
Right-click the zone → New Record. The everyday types:
- A / AAAA: name → IPv4/IPv6 address
- CNAME: alias, e.g.
wwwpointing to a web server’s A record - MX: mail routing for the domain
- PTR: reverse record (in the reverse zone)
04terminalStep 4: Point Clients and Test
Set each lab machine’s NIC to use the DNS server’s IP as its preferred DNS. Then test from a client:
nslookup dc01.lab.local — an answer with the correct IP proves the zone works. Also try nslookup www.google.com to confirm the server forwards unknown names to the internet (forwarders or root hints).
From here, common follow-ups are the DHCP server (which can hand out this DNS address automatically) and the web server guide, whose bindings rely on DNS names. In short, to configure DNS server reliably, follow the order above and verify each step.
