This guide covers data deduplication Windows Server step by step, with every setting in the order you will use it. Data Deduplication in Windows Server 2016 finds duplicate chunks across files on a volume and stores them once, typically saving 50-90% on file servers, software-deployment shares and VHD libraries. It is transparent to users — files look and open exactly as before — and it is a favorite exam and lab objective.

01constructionWhat It Works Best On
- General purpose file shares — documents, installers, archives
- Software deployment shares — many similar EXE/MSI versions: often 80%+ savings
- VHD libraries and virtualization storage (not the active VM files themselves)
Do not dedupe volumes holding live databases, Exchange or SQL data, or the host’s own system volume — those workloads want direct, unmediated disk I/O.
02downloadStep 1: Install the Feature
Server Manager → Add Roles and Features → Features → Data Deduplication, or PowerShell:
Install-WindowsFeature FS-Data-Deduplication -IncludeManagementTools
03usbStep 2: Enable Deduplication on a Volume
In File and Storage Services → Volumes, right-click a data volume → Configure Data Deduplication. Choose the usage type — General purpose file server, Software deployment share ( volumes containing ISOs/MSIs), or Virtual Desktop — and set the minimum file age (default 3 days: recent files stay uncompressed until they stop changing). PowerShell equivalent:
Enable-DedupVolume E: -UsageType General
04terminalStep 3: Watch the Jobs and Measure Savings
Deduplication runs as scheduled optimization jobs (hourly by default). Check results:
Get-DedupVolume E: — savings rate and policy
Get-DedupStatus E: — actual bytes saved
Scrubbing jobs validate dedupe chunk-store integrity weekly; on Server 2016 you can also enable backup-friendly settings so backup software sees normal files. If optimization never runs, check that the volume passes the usage-type and file-age rules, and look at job history under Deduplication in Server Manager.
